NATURAL DISASTERS (EARTHQUAKE・TYPHOON)

(1) EARTHQUAKE (JISHIN)

・First, put yourself in a safe place.  When the tremor subsides, turn off oven tops, stoves or other fire related equipments quickly in order to prevent fire.  When you go outside, beware of debris from broken windows, roof tiles, and falling objects.  If possible, wear a helmet.

・People living near the coast should quickly take refuge at a place of safety to avoid tidal waves (TSUNAMI).  It is necessary to determine beforehand which temporary refuge you will evacuate to.  A tall reinforced concrete building can be an ideal refuge.  It is also necessary to prepare helmets and flashlights, and to secure furniture to the wall.

(2) THE TOKAI EARTHQUAKE EVACUATION ORDER (KEIKAI SENGEN)

When the government issues a warning declaration, people living in dangerous areas such as near the coast or the foot of a mountain have to evacuate immediately.  Please be sure to evacuate with your emergency kit.

(3) TYPHOON (TAIFU)

Large typhoons (usually hitting Japan from mid-August to mid-October) may cause flooding and destruction of your property.  Please listen to the typhoon updates on television or radio.  A nearby elementary, junior high school or community disaster prevention center (KOMYUNITI BOSAI SENTA) is the evacuation site.  When any information regarding evacuation is declared, go to the evacuation site with your emergency kit.  Also, please keep a stock of emergency foods and flashlights beforehand.

RECOMMENDATION: Helmets and flashlights are very useful in an emergency. To prevent your furniture from falling and causing injury, it is advisable to secure your furniture to walls with brackets available at most DIY stores.
