HEALTH INSURANCE AND NATIONAL PENSION PLAN

There are 3 types of insurance; KENKO HOKEN, or Social Health Insurance, into which plan employees are enrolled by their employer, KOKI KOREISHA IRYO SEIDO, or the Health Care System for the Aged, for people aged 75 and older (and people with certain disabilities aged 65 and older), and KOKUMIN KENKO HOKEN, or the National Health Insurance for people not enrolled in either of the plans above.

1 SOCIAL HEALTH INSURANCE (KENKO HOKEN) – (KYOKAI KENPO, KENKO HOKEN KUMIAI)

This insurance covers the holder and their dependants in case of sickness and injury.  The insurance will cover 70% of the total medical expenses, meaning your personal payment is 30%.  The insurance premium differs according to the income bracket the holder’s income falls into.  Half of the premium costs are paid for by the holder’s employer.

2 HEALTH CARE SYSTEM FOR THE AGED (KOKI KOREISHA IRYO SEIDO)

This insurance policy is for the people aged 75 and older, and people with certain disabilities aged 65 and older.  The holder of this insurance pays 10% to 30% of the medical expenses at medical institutions depending on which income bracket the holder’s income falls into. The premium is determined per holder based on their income and the length of the contributing period.

3 NATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE (KOKUMIN KENKO HOKEN)

This type of insurance covers the holder and their dependants living in Yaizu City against sickness and/or injury.  30% of the total medical expenses are paid by the holder.  The insurance premium is determined per household based on the income of the holder, their assets, and the number of people per household enrolled in the National Health Insurance.

 (※If you do not have a permit to stay in Japan for 1 year or more, or if you have joined the Social Health Insurance Plan, you are not allowed to join the National Health Insurance.)

4 NATIONAL PENSION (KOKUMIN-NENKIN)

This pension plan is run by the government (NIHON NENKIN KIKO), and there are 3 basic types:  the Old-age Pension (ROREI NENKIN), the Disability Pension (SHOGAI NENKIN), and the Survivor’s Pension (IZOKU NENKIN).  Every person who resides in Japan and who is 20 years of age or older, up to age 60, is obliged to join this National Pension Plan.  Those who have joined this plan for at least 25 years or those who have a tax holiday will start receiving the Old-age Pension at the age of 65.  If you have joined this plan for 6 months or more, and suddenly have to leave Japan, please apply to NIHON NENKIN KIKO for the lump-sum withdrawal payment within 2 years from the date you leave Japan.

Category 1

The self employed, such as farmers, fishermen, etc.

Freelance professionals, students, and the unemployed.

Age:  20 to 60 years old.

 Bring the payment slip sent by the National Pension Office (Nenkin Jimusho) to a financial institution or a convenience store to make your payment.  You can also pay by account transfer or credit card.

Category 2

Policyholders of the Corporate Pension plan (KOSEI-NENKIN) or the Public Service Pension Insurance (KYOSAI-NENKIN) Withheld from salary.

Category 3

Spouses of policyholders in Category 2. You are not required to pay premiums. These are covered by the category 2 pension plan.
